I worked closely with Loyola’s Institutional Research department to create a marketing campaign to boost student participation in the NSSE/FSSE Survey that occurs every four years.

Loyola’s mascot is the greyhound. I was fortunate enough to know Alexandra, one of the mascots from the nineties. She inspired my adoption of a retired racing greyhound in 2016.

Inspired by the original Super Mario Bros. I used 8-bit graphics to create a set of characters and a world for them to inhabit.

The goal of the game is for Zandy (a nickname I made to reference Alexandra) to make friends and smell fire hydrants. When she eats bananas she becomes Super Zandy, and when she steps on an acorn it hurts and she returns to regular Zandy. At the end she graduates!

This project exceeded my client’s expectations and they were able to increase the response rate even among a larger student population as engagement has become more challenging.

INSPIRATION

The original Super Mario Bros. served as the inspiration for the artwork and the animation.

Alexandra was Loyola’s first live mascot in over fifty years. She was my senior-year neighbor and visited my room occasionally to nap on our couch. She inspired my years later to adopt a retired racer.

This is Momo in a photoshoot showing off a Loyola kerchief my manager designed.

Here are a few more pics of Momo who passed away right before I started working on this project.

INITIAL CONCEPTS

Option A

Option B

Clearly inspired by Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, Option A ended up being used for other promotions on campus during the spring semester. The pixel art option was just a fun way to connect with the students. Luckily my clients read between the lines and asked for a pixel art greyhound, which I didn’t explore because of looming deadlines and the extra effort it would require to illustrate. However, once they mentioned it in the presentation I jumped at the opportunity. I knew it would be difficult since I’d recently said goodbye to my greyhound Momo, but this was the project I needed to help mourn his loss.
